About Ken the catio builder

I’ve been building things my entire life.  As a child I was always building things from scratch, from forts in the woods to cardboard houses for the toads we would find in my parent’s window wells, to homemade model rockets (the kind you shoot into the sky) to putt-putt golf courses my siblings and I would build under the pine trees in the park.  Basically, if I could imagine it, I would usually try to build it.

As I moved into adulthood I started working with wood and learning carpentry.  As a college art major, it was the perfect way for me to combine my imagination with my love of working with my hands.  The first major project I built as an adult was a queen size Japanese style futon bed which is still in use in our home.  About 25 years ago my wife and I bought a 120 year old, 20 room duplex which I began renovating.  The experience I gained from learning home renovation skills eventually lead to me starting a small home improvement business about 10 years ago.

Why catios?

Growing up my family had dogs.  My wife’s family had cats.  By the time we got married I had a dog and a cat.  Over the years we have now had 6 cats and 6 dogs – our pets are (and have been) our children.  About 10 years ago we were sitting on the patio at the back of our house eating dinner al fresco.  Whenever we would sit at the patio table our cats would sit in the window and look out at us, crying at us because they couldn’t join us and the dogs outside.  One day I was telling my wife how bad I felt for the cats when she said “So why don’t you just build them a catio?”  “A what?” I asked – I had never heard of a catio before.  And so, several weeks later, I had designed and built my first catio, which our cats have enjoyed ever since (our catio actually has a spiral staircase!).

I enjoy designing things and making them reality.  While I am comfortable with building things based on someone else’s design, I enjoy the challenge of designing something on my own and then figuring out how to build it.  Since most catios are custom structures, this makes building catios a perfect fit for my passions and skills.  In addition to catios, I have completed other projects for my clients and their pets, from custom steps to make it easier for a senior dog to get onto the bed, to custom litter box enclosures (to keep dogs out of the litter box), to “doggy diggin’ dirt boxes” to give dogs a place to dig in the dirt so they won’t dig holes in the yard.  Simply put, I love building things for pets!
